Rat terriers have been a surprise and a delight to us. We bought our first simply to catch rats on our farm. We became so enamored with Sampson that we bought Sarah. She is the quintessential hunter. She lives to eradicate our rat population. Sampson, sweet boy that he is, won't kill rats, but loves rounding them up with Sarah so she can kill them.

Rat terriers are true to terrier personality. They are fearless, intelligent, alert and loving. They love to go where you go and are great companion dogs. They are great watch dogs. They will alert you to anything out of the ordinary. Unlike Jack Russells, rat terriers have an "off" switch. They love to sit with you and relax, if that is what you are doing. They make great farm dogs or city dogs. There are standard 18-25 pound rat terriers and the smaller ones called minis (ours are minis). Minis range from 10-18 lbs. There are some toys, less than 10lbs. Our rat terriers do well with our large anatolian shepherds.
